River valleys, medieval towns, cycling adventures and mountain views. From the Moselle and Rhine to Bavaria and the Austrian border, Germany delivered some of the most memorable moments of our Europe 2026 journey.
Germany formed an important part of both the outward and return legs of our 2026 European adventure, which eventually took us all the way to Montenegro before heading home again.
During the trip we stayed in a mixture of campsites and stellplätze across Bavaria, the Romantic Road, the Rhine Valley and the Moselle. Along the way we discovered beautiful medieval towns, excellent cycling routes, good-value stopovers and more than a few places that tempted us to stay longer.
From the stork-filled rooftops of Dinkelsbühl and the fairytale streets of Rothenburg ob der Tauber to the lakes of Bavaria and the vineyards of the Rhine Valley, Germany offered plenty of variety and some memorable stops.
Not every site was a favourite, but each played a part in the journey. These are our honest reviews of the campsites, stellplätze and stopovers we used while travelling through Germany in Matilda during our 89-day European tour.

Camping Waldfrieden — Saarburg
A peaceful hillside campsite just a short walk from the centre of Saarburg. With excellent cycling along the River Saar and a charming town full of cafés, shops and waterfalls, it was a lovely place to spend a couple of days.
A well-managed stellplatz with excellent facilities beside the sports centre. An easy cycle ride takes you into Ulm, where the impressive cathedral and attractive old town make it well worth exploring.
A great-value stellplatz within walking distance of Füssen. We enjoyed cycling around the nearby lakes and soaking up the lively atmosphere in the town, making it a stop we would happily have stayed at longer.
Tauberromantik Campingplatz, Rothenburg ob der Tauber
A peaceful campsite within easy reach of one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval towns. An excellent base for exploring the cobbled streets, historic walls and fairytale atmosphere of Rothenburg.
Wohnmobilstellplatz Dinkelsbühl (P2)
A simple, convenient stellplatz just a short walk from the beautifully preserved old town of Dinkelsbühl. Ideal for exploring this lesser-known medieval gem before continuing your journey.
A friendly lakeside campsite close to Chiemsee. With easy cycling, beautiful scenery and ferry access to the famous islands, it’s a relaxing place to spend a few days.
A spacious, well-laid-out stellplatz on the edge of Boppard. An excellent base for exploring the Rhine Valley, whether on foot, by bike or by taking the nearby chairlift for spectacular views
A well-located riverside campsite within walking distance of the picturesque town of Cochem. A great base for cycling the Moselle Valley, exploring the castle and enjoying one of Germany’s most scenic wine regions.
