Spain 2026 – The Final Days, Home Sweet Home
Our final days in Spain took us from the mountains to the beautiful beaches of Santander, followed by a ferry crossing, one last night in Matilda and the journey home to North Wales. The end of another wonderful adventure.
Day 28 – Mountains, Sunshine And The Sea
Saturday 31 October 2026
Santander, Cantabria, Spain
Our last full day in Spain, and the weather delivered again!
The journey from Burgos was wonderful. The scenery was stunning, with mountains, green fields and beautiful autumn colours. There was something really special about it.
The roads twisted and turned around the mountains, crossing huge viaducts with breathtaking views of the valleys far below. What a drive!
We’re staying on a free aire tonight, just a few miles from the port. It’s really clean, with a lovely view over the park. There are motorhomes everywhere, mainly Spanish and French. Not a bad way to enjoy a city stopover.
It wasn’t long before the bikes were unhitched, and after a short ride we were beside the sea.

It’s certainly been a day for views. Pristine sandy beaches stretching as far as the eye could see, beautiful gardens and miles of cycle paths.
It was very busy, with families and people making the most of a warm, sunny afternoon. With all the apartments lining the coast, it reminded me of Llandudno, another lovely seaside town.

We haven’t ventured into the city itself, but Santander certainly is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
A lovely way to finish our time in Spain.
Days 29–31 – Farewell Spain, Home Sweet Home
Sunday 1 – Tuesday 3 November 2026
Santander, Cantabria, Spain – Portsmouth, England – Prestatyn, North Wales
Our final morning in Spain brought yet more blue skies and sunshine. With a few hours to spare before catching the ferry, we headed off for a walk around the park and a hunt for breakfast.
We got quite excited when we spotted McDonald’s, thinking breakfast was sorted. Unfortunately, it was closed, and so was the supermarket. Luckily, the bakery was open, and savoury pastries and freshly squeezed orange juice ticked all the boxes.

We found ourselves a lovely spot in the park for a picnic, making the most of our last few hours in Spain.
Then it was time to head for the ferry port.
There didn’t seem to be a straight road in Santander, and we ended up meandering through the streets on an unexpected whistle-stop tour of the city before joining the long queue of motorhomes waiting to board.

Once aboard, the rest of Sunday passed quite happily with a bit of television binge-watching.
We both slept well, and Monday was a lazy day at sea. There was nothing much to do except relax, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and wait for England to appear.
It was around 9 pm before we finally arrived in Portsmouth. After a bit more waiting around to disembark, we headed for Port Solent, where we’d found a spacious car park for our final night in Matilda.
Home Sweet Home
Tuesday morning, and it was time for the last leg back to North Wales.
Apart from one delay getting out of Portsmouth, we had a good journey and arrived home early afternoon.
The garden was full of colour and had certainly grown while we’d been away. It was lovely to see it looking so good.

Then came the less exciting part of motorhome travelling. Emptying Matilda, putting everything away and tackling the washing.
After nearly 48 hours of travelling, even though we’d spent much of that time doing very little, we were both ready for home.
Until The Next Adventure
And that’s another adventure over.
We’ve had a wonderful month exploring Spain, enjoying the countryside, mountains, walking, cycling and, of course, plenty of café stops.
Travelling at a slower pace and spending longer in places has suited us. It’s something we’ll definitely do again.
Finally, a big thank you to everyone who has followed our travels. It’s been lovely sharing our days, photographs and occasional mishaps with you.
For now, Matilda is having a well-earned rest, although I doubt it will be too long before we’re planning where to take her next.
Until then, thank you for coming along with us. ❤️🚐
