Matilda’s Stopovers – Spain 2025

Some of our stopovers were wonderful discoveries, while others were simply convenient places to spend the night.

Here’s where we stayed during our winter 2025 journey through Spain, listed in the order we visited, with prices, contact details and a few personal observations.

🇪🇸 Spain – Heading South

Mas La Riba – Mountain Stopover

25–26 January | 2 nights

A beautiful, peaceful stopover surrounded by forests, meadows and mountain scenery. Getting there was an adventure in itself, with what I remember as around 15 km of winding mountain road.

The spacious pitches, wonderful views and excellent walking made the journey worthwhile. Facilities were basic, with metered electricity and a rather memorable toilet! One of our favourite discoveries.

Area Bellvei – Tarragona

27–29 January | 3 nights | €16 + €5 electricity per night

A small motorhome site near the coast, with good access to cycling routes. Facilities included hot showers, laundry and a covered pool.

Showers cost an additional €1, although ours wasn’t particularly good. Not the prettiest location, but a useful base for exploring the surrounding area.

Camping Els Ports – Arnes

30 January–3 February | 5 nights | €21 per night

One of our favourite stops of the trip. Surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, this was a wonderful area for road cycling and walking, with the historic village of Arnes nearby.

The campsite had good facilities, warm showers, laundry and a bar. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring this lovely part of inland Spain.

Camping El Cid – Peñíscola

4–8 February | 5 nights | €17 per night

A busy winter campsite, popular with European motorhomers. The pitches were rather close together, but it was conveniently located for visiting Peñíscola’s beaches and beautiful old town.

There were good opportunities for cycling along the coast. Electricity was included in the price, and there was an on-site restaurant. The swimming pool was closed for winter.

A lovely, peaceful campsite in the hills near Sax, with spacious pitches and beautiful countryside all around.

A convenient free motorhome aire just off the main road, making it an easy overnight stop on our journey north.

Water and waste disposal facilities were available. Puerto Lápice is a lovely historic town with traditional architecture, windmills and connections to the adventures of Don Quixote.

A useful stopover with the added bonus of an interesting town to explore.

Parking Autocaravanas – Burgos

28 February | 1 night | Free

Probably our most surreal stopover of the trip!

A large motorhome parking area in the middle of a housing estate, surrounded by apartment blocks. It certainly wasn’t scenic, but it served its purpose as a convenient overnight stop.

Water and waste disposal facilities were available, and the location was useful for visiting Burgos.

Izard Kanpina – Atez, Navarra

1–2 March | 2 nights | €23 per night

A lovely campsite in the hills of Navarra, surrounded by spectacular scenery and excellent walking country.

Facilities included electricity, Wi-Fi, a restaurant, small shop and swimming pool.

The setting was beautiful, although the weather was decidedly chilly. We even had snow! Quite a contrast to some of the warmer places we’d enjoyed farther south.

A Few Final Thoughts

Looking back, it was the smaller campsites and countryside stopovers that we enjoyed most. We loved finding places where we could park Matilda, get the bikes out and explore without needing to drive anywhere.

Not every stopover was perfect, and a few were simply places to spend the night, but they all played a part in our first winter adventure through Spain.

The prices and facilities listed are from our January–March 2025 journey. Details may have changed, so we recommend checking directly with each campsite or motorhome aire before travelling.
