Austria 🇦🇹
We crossed Austria twice during our Europe 2026 adventure. The first time we were focused on beating the snow; the second time we slowed down and discovered sparkling lakes, mountain scenery and some of the most beautiful places of the entire trip. 🇦🇹🚐
Austria appeared twice on our Europe 2026 route. Heading south, it was more of a gateway through the Alps, with our attention firmly fixed on the weather and avoiding any late-season snow.
On the journey home, however, we had time to slow down, stay a little longer and discover what makes Austria such a special place. Sparkling lakes, dramatic mountain scenery, excellent cycling and villages that looked as though they belonged on a postcard made it one of the highlights of our trip.

🏕️Campsites and Stopovers
Below are the campsites and stopovers we used while travelling through Austria. Click on each one to read the full review.
Grubhof, Lofer
Our first stop in Austria as we crossed the Alps heading south. Although we only stayed for one night, the mountain setting and excellent facilities made it a memorable introduction to Austria.
Wernberg (near Villach)
A peaceful overnight stop close to the Slovenian border. Free parking outside a traditional Austrian inn, with quiet cycling through a landscape of lakes before we continued south.
Faaker See
One of the highlights of our return through Austria. A relaxed lakeside campsite with beautiful mountain scenery, excellent facilities and easy cycling into Villach.
Golling (near Salzburg)
A lovely mountain campsite and a great base for walking, cycling and exploring the nearby waterfalls, with easy train access into Salzburg.
Wolfgangsee
Perhaps the most picturesque stop of our Austrian journey. Crystal-clear water, spectacular mountain scenery and easy cycling to the beautiful lakeside towns of St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen.
Mondsee
Our final Austrian stop before returning to Germany. A peaceful, well-equipped campsite surrounded by mountain scenery and an ideal base for exploring the Mondsee area.
Austria surprised us. On the way south we simply passed through, but on the journey home we discovered just how much it has to offer. It's a country we'll happily return to, and next time we'll allow ourselves even longer to explore.
