Our motorhome stopovers in France during our first overseas adventure in 2025. From historic towns to peaceful countryside and convenient overnight aires, discover where we stayed, what we paid and our experiences along the way.
Our first overseas adventure in Matilda took us through France and Spain during January, February and March 2025.
France was where our journey began and ended, with a mixture of motorhome aires, and free overnight stops along the way.
Here’s a record of where we stayed, what we paid and our thoughts about each stopover.

🇫🇷 France – Heading South
Aire Municipale – Montreuil-sur-Mer

Free motorhome parking close to the historic town centre. A lovely location for exploring the cobbled streets and old ramparts.
Camping-Car Park – Lailly-en-Val

A peaceful stop beside a lake and park, within walking distance of town.
Electricity included, but no showers or toilets.
Camping-Car Park – Souillac

Convenient for exploring the charming old town and enjoying walks beside the Dordogne River.
Camping-Car Park – Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda

A peaceful stop in a green setting at the foothills of the Pyrenees, close to the River Tech.
A lovely opportunity to relax and enjoy the surrounding countryside before continuing south into Spain.
🇫🇷 France – The Journey Home
Aire de Camping-Car Le Grain – Bordeaux

A convenient motorhome stopover north of Bordeaux.
Electricity and Wi-Fi included, but no showers or toilets. A useful base for visiting Bordeaux by public transport.

Camping-Car Park – Nantes Petit Port
Address: 21 Boulevard du Petit Port, Nantes, France
5–6 March | 2 nights | Free during our stay
A motorhome aire beside Nantes Camping, close to the racecourse and park, with a tram stop nearby for easy access into Nantes.
The facilities looked rather tired, and the entrance barrier was broken, so we weren’t charged during our visit.
A convenient base for exploring the city.

Our final overnight stop before catching the ferry home.
Situated right beside the ferry terminal, with easy access to the seafront and local cycle paths, including the route to historic Pegasus Bridge.
An ideal location for our last night in France before heading home.
