The Campsite
Camping Riaza is a pleasant, established campsite surrounded by beautiful countryside, with the Sierra de Ayllón mountains providing a lovely backdrop.
We liked the site almost immediately. The pitches are generously sized, giving us plenty of room around Matilda, and the peaceful setting makes it a comfortable base for exploring the area.
There’s a restaurant on site, which was a real bonus. Even better, we could eat before nine o’clock! I thoroughly enjoyed my steak, while Richard opted for a chicken burger.
Facilities
The facilities are clean, although a little tired in places. There are a few maintenance niggles, including broken toilet door locks. The hot water was inconsistent in the women’s showers, although Richard had no problems in the men’s.
The fresh water supply was another drawback. It consisted of a hosepipe connected to a fitting in the ground, which wasn’t suitable for filling Matilda’s water tank.
There are laundry facilities, which were particularly welcome after several weeks of travelling. We paid €10 to get the washing done.
None of these issues are disastrous, but they’re the little things that make a difference when you’re travelling in a motorhome.
Exploring the Area
The location is one of the campsite’s biggest attractions.
Riaza is approximately 5 km away, a lovely traditional Spanish town with an attractive Plaza Mayor, bars, restaurants and shops.
We enjoyed a wonderful cycle ride along quiet country lanes, with some challenging climbs and fabulous views across the surrounding mountains. Watching vultures soaring overhead was particularly memorable.
The countryside is beautiful at this time of year, with the autumn colours adding another dimension to the landscape. There’s plenty of walking too, including woodland trails and mountain routes.
We also checked out the motorhome aire in Riaza. It looked excellent and is conveniently situated close to town.
Our Verdict
We really enjoyed Camping Riaza. The spacious pitches, peaceful surroundings and beautiful countryside make it an excellent base for walking and cycling.
Having discovered the aire near Riaza, we’d have two good options next time. If we needed electric hook-up or laundry facilities, we’d choose the campsite. Otherwise, we’d be very happy to stay at the aire, particularly as it’s so close to town.
