🌿 Freedom as a Kind of Currency
Small pockets of freedom, woven into everyday life.
A two-minute read inspired by Ali Abdaal’s latest newsletter
Ali Abdaal dropped another newsletter into my inbox the other week. It followed on from his idea about small experiments and made me think a bit more carefully about freedom.
Not freedom in the big, dramatic sense. More the everyday kind. The sort we use — or waste — without really noticing.
He compared freedom to a kind of currency. We all have some, and we spend it every day, whether we realise it or not.
It made me notice a few small places where it shows up for me.
🚶♀️ The freedom to catch up
It’s easy to underestimate how much difference a quick catch-up can make.
Just a few minutes. A short chat.
Sometimes that’s enough.
🚦 The freedom to say no
This is one I still notice myself learning.
Sometimes it’s just choosing not to do something — not because it’s wrong, but because it doesn’t quite fit that day.
Saying no isn’t dramatic. Often it’s quiet and unremarkable.
But it does leave a bit more space behind. 🌿
⏳ The freedom to choose the pace
Life moves at different speeds. Some days feel full and busy, others slower.
I notice the moments when I ease off a little — a slower walk, an easier ride, a pause before moving on. Nothing dramatic. Just choosing not to rush when there’s no real need to. ☕
✨ In the end
Freedom isn’t usually about big changes or bold moves. Most of the time, it lives in ordinary moments.
A simple question.
A quiet no.
A pause before moving on.
Small pockets of freedom, woven into everyday life.
It’s made me notice how often my diary is full.
Maybe I need to allow myself the freedom to say no more often — and leave a little space.
