Belgium turned out to be one of the unexpected highlights of our tour. Easy cycling, beautiful historic towns, great food and welcoming stopovers made it a country we’d happily return to. Here are the campsites and overnight stops we used along the way.
Belgium was our first proper stop after leaving Calais and proved to be an excellent introduction to our European adventure.
One thing that immediately impressed us was the cycling infrastructure. Dedicated routes criss-cross the country, many completely separated from traffic, making it easy to travel between towns, villages, canals and open countryside.
If you're planning to explore by bike, a good cycling map is well worth carrying, as the route network can sometimes be confusing.
From quiet canal paths to historic towns and peaceful rural landscapes, Belgium turned out to be a wonderfully easy and enjoyable country to explore on two wheels.

Camping Memling, Bruges
A comfortable campsite and a great base for visiting Bruges, with easy cycling into the city and along the nearby canals.
After the fairytale beauty of Bruges, Namur felt more like a real, everyday Belgian city. We enjoyed exploring the centre, soaking up the café atmosphere and discovering its attractive squares and historic buildings. The free aire wasn’t somewhere we’d linger for long, but it worked perfectly as a convenient overnight stop.
A great base for exploring one of Belgium’s most famous cycling regions, with easy access to riverside paths, quiet roads and the rolling countryside of Flanders.
A convenient and peaceful stopover in rural Belgium, ideal for breaking the journey while still offering opportunities for walking and cycling nearby.
A moving and memorable visit to a city forever linked with the First World War. The Menin Gate ceremony, historic centre and surrounding battlefields make this a place that you will remember long after you’ve left.
Belgium was a country we enjoyed far more than we expected, with friendly people, excellent cycling and some beautiful historic towns.
