An Unexpected Find Beneath the Gallery

Whilst I was in Sydney, I wandered into the basement of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and found something I really wasn’t expecting.

An old underground storage tank had been turned into a space made from recycled objects — part artwork, part playground.

It was called The Key’s Under the Mat, and it was full of music, movement, and kids just playing, running around and enjoying themselves.

One part I really loved was a display showing what children said they wanted in a playground. Some of it was funny, some thoughtful — and it really showed how imaginative kids are.

They’re encouraged to climb, move things about, and just enjoy themselves.

Sometimes the most memorable places are the ones you don’t plan to find.
